Hand holding a pencil sketches a man with wheat on paper titled "Doodles of Devotion: The Parable of the Rich Fool". The backround is a Train window with a view of a station platfom outside.

As someone who loves creating art, I often find myself drawn to beautiful images and illustrations. But, art is not just about "pretty pictures." It can be used to foster community and build faith. That's why I'm excited to share my "Doodles of Devotion" series. My goal is to incorporate the "Four Keys" of faith formation into each devotional:

Devotionals: Engaging with Scripture

Each devotional begins with a citation from the Gospel and an illustration of the corresponding story. I intentionally leave out the text itself to encourage families to actively engage with the biblical narrative by consulting the church bulletin or their Bible. This approach fosters curiosity about the Bible and helps us spend quality time together.

Rituals and Traditions: A Sense of Belonging

The biblical text I select aligns with the Gospel readings in the ELCA Lectionary, ensuring that churches across our Synod are on the same page. Imagine the joy of hearing your child say, "Oh yes, I remember hearing that Gospel read in church today!" As we engage in rituals and traditions, we cultivate a sense of belonging to something greater than ourselves.

Caring Conversations: Fostering Connections

The second page of each devotional features reflection questions designed to spark meaningful conversations between family members. These questions invite us to ponder not only the message of the Gospel story but also its relevance to our everyday lives. They create a valuable opportunity to understand and be present for each other.

Service: Putting Faith into Action

Pages three and four feature more illustrations or visual puzzles that serve as a reminder of our connection to the broader community. It's an invitation to ponder how we interact with each other, whether through serving a neighbor, participating in church activities, or finding ways to lend a helping hand. By encouraging service, we embody the teachings of Jesus and strengthen our community ties.

Through "Doodles of Devotion," I hope to encourage families to engage more deeply with their faith, fostering joy and connection in their lives. I'm excited to see how these doodles will inspire thoughtful moments and conversations in your home!
