In this 4th issue of Doodles of Devotion, we delve into a thought-provoking passage from the Gospel of Luke, 12:49-56, that brings to light the complexities of faith within familial relationships. Here, Jesus shares a powerful message about the inevitable disagreements that can arise, even among those we love the most. This notion may seem contrary to the teachings of love and peace that Jesus embodies, but it's a vital part of our faith journey.
Jesus encourages us to be brave and to follow Him, urging us to demonstrate love in all circumstances. This love can be transformative, yet it is often challenging to accept and even more difficult to practice.
To help facilitate discussions about this passage, particularly with young children, this issue begins with a comic strip that illustrates a simple conflict between siblings. It also offers "conflict resolution tips." The siblings argue not solely because of differing opinions, but because of unexpressed needs, desires, and fears. Through sharing and active listening, they begin to understand each other better and are ultimately able to find constructive solutions. This simple exercise of reading and coloring this comic strip opens the door for families or groups to reflect on their own dynamics and encourage open communication.
After reading Luke 12:49-56 together, I invite families to engage in a conversation around three essential questions:
1. Why do families sometimes disagree about Jesus?
2. Why is it important to learn about different perspectives?
3. What does it mean to make peace with someone?
These questions can spark meaningful dialogue and help family members articulate their feelings and beliefs.
As we navigate our discussions, let’s remember that disagreements can be opportunities for growth and understanding. They challenge us to reflect on our beliefs, consider different viewpoints, and practice empathy.
What are your thoughts on Luke 12:49-56? Have any stories or ideas arisen from your family discussions that you would like to share? Let’s continue to explore how we can foster a spirit of love and peace, even amidst our differences.
